From Guest to Photographer: How I Crashed My Cousin’s Wedding (With a Camera!)
You know how sometimes life throws you a curveball and you just roll with it?
That’s exactly what happened when I found myself in San Francisco for a wedding I wasn’t planning to shoot.
As an avid traveler, surprises are pretty much my norm—but this one took the cake. Picture this: I’d just landed from an 8-hour flight to Chicago, squeezed in a 6-hour laundry session, and then boarded another plane to San Francisco. Jetlagged and unsure of what I’d packed (thanks, carry-on!), I was set to enjoy my cousin’s wedding.
With my camera in tow, I thought I was all set—though, pro tip: weather-appropriate clothing is a must, and I learned that the hard way. I’d been hopping between climates and didn’t check the weather app (thanks again, jetlag).
After a spontaneous detour to Big Sur and a fun Friday night in Monterey, I was ready to relax. But then, surprise! The photographer had canceled, and suddenly, I was the one behind the camera. Cue my third-wheel skills—totally unexpected, but here we go!
The next morning, I grabbed whatever gear I could muster and got to work (thankfully, not in the outfit I initially planned for the wedding). As someone who prides themselves on being relaxed and ready for anything, this was a new adventure. The day was filled with joy and celebration, and for the first time, my family got to see me in action behind the lens.
This experience was profoundly special.
I had the chance to reconnect with my cousin, Adam, someone I hadn’t been close to for years. This wasn’t just a wedding; it was a chance to rekindle our bond and show support for each other. Capturing Adam and Elise’s love through my lens was incredibly moving. Their respect, admiration, and joy for one another were palpable, and it reminded me why I love what I do.
My family seeing me work was a unique and meaningful moment. They witnessed the passion and dedication I pour into my craft, and it was a blast to share that side of myself with them.
From the spontaneous adventure to the heartfelt moments, this wedding turned out to be a fantastic reminder of why I love what I do. It wasn’t just another job; it was a chance to capture the powerful stories that unfold through the lens and celebrate the deep connections that make our journeys worthwhile. The day was filled with laughter, love, and a touch of chaos, making for some truly memorable shots. Here’s to unexpected adventures and capturing the magic in every moment!
