Swiss Chocolate Dreams and Lake Como Magic
Today was one for the books—an early start, but oh-so worth it. Why? Because I got to try Swiss chocolate IRL and check off one of the top places on my bucket list: Lake Como! EEEEEP! 😍
We woke up early but slept like babies at the hotel, so we were JAZZED to head to the train station and meet up with our group. The itinerary for the day was stacked, and it didn’t disappoint:
A Journey to the Italian Alps 🏔️
We departed from central Milan, making our way towards the Italian Alps by coach. The drive was incredibly relaxing, with stunning scenery to set the mood. Our first stop? The dreamy Lake Como.
Cruising Lake Como 🛥️
The best way to experience Lake Como is by boat, and that’s exactly what we did. We hopped on a private boat for a relaxing cruise, gliding along the water and marveling at the luxury real estate that dots the shoreline. Our guide pointed out some seriously famous villas—think Star Wars and James Bond movie locations—and even homes of international stars like George Clooney. The views were nothing short of breathtaking, and the onboard restaurant made it even better with refreshments to sip while soaking it all in.
Exploring Bellagio 🌸
Next up, we returned to land to explore the picturesque town of Bellagio—often called “the pearl of Lake Como.” With its charming streets and stunning views, it was the perfect place to wander, shop, and, of course, grab some delicious local food. We had lunch at a cute little spot called Ristoro Forma & Gusto, where the pesto pasta was to die for. Seriously, it was so good that it might just be the highlight of our culinary adventures.
After indulging in our delectable meal, we hopped back onto our boat to head to our group tour bus and continue our journey to Switzerland.
But here’s where things took a turn for the dramatic. When we boarded the bus, we found that some folks had claimed the seats we originally had. We didn’t think much of it and decided to find a new set of seats. However, a couple in the group threw a fit, claiming we had messed up the bus's “balance” by switching seats. Our tour guide got involved, only to discover that the people in our original seats were not budging.
When our tour guide spoke to the lady who had taken our seats, she mentioned she had “forgotten” where she was sitting earlier. Meanwhile, I’m guessing she was actually sitting with her four other family members a few rows back, but that’s just my take. To add to the chaos, one of the individuals who had taken our seats managed to spill her entire water bottle on the seat as she was getting up to complain to our tour guide. The entire scene was quite the spectacle. So, we ended up splitting up and just rolling with the situation. Stay tuned for why this little drama became relevant later in our journey!
Crossing into Switzerland: Lugano 🇨🇭
After leaving Bellagio, we continued our journey over the Swiss border to the Italian-speaking town of Lugano. Nestled at the foot of the Alps and often referred to as “the Monte Carlo of Switzerland,” Lugano was everything I imagined and more. Luxury shopping, fine art, and those scenic lake views—it was a playground for celebrities and regular folk alike. We had time to explore on our own, and I definitely took advantage by indulging in some rich Swiss chocolate from Vanini Swiss Chocolate (since 1871). It was damn good chocolate. We also visited their café and enjoyed some gelato—YUM.
Oh, and let me tell you about the water. One of the highlights of Lugano was Piazza Manzoni, where we had the most amazing water I’ve ever tasted. Unfiltered and pure, no cap, it was that good.
As we strolled around, we ran into a couple from our tour group who filled us in on the bus drama from earlier who were fully on our side with the entire bus situation, calling it “despicable” (yes, I laughed out loud).
When we returned to the bus, we reclaimed our, now damp, original seats (thanks again, seat-stealer, jk). This time, the seat-stealer and her son took someone else’s seats, causing yet another chain reaction. A mom traveling with her daughter and another family that had been sitting together got involved, can you say drama?
We finally got the bus moving after someone bravely gave their seat up & moved - so that we could head back to Milan, just in time for Aperitivo.
Back to Milan for Aperitivo 🍹
After a full day of sightseeing and indulging in Swiss treats, we decided to unwind with aperitivo in the Navigli area—the canal district that’s basically Milan’s version of Venice. Watching the sunset, indulging in even more gelato, and soaking in the vibrant atmosphere was the perfect way to end an incredible day.
Now, we’re back at the hotel, ready to recharge for tomorrow’s adventure. Any guesses where we’re headed next? Stay tuned!
